Why have you chosen to be illiterate when education is for the poor? is Lujang John Jangaling's inspirational story about growing up as an orphan and defeating the odds of the educational journey. Through determination, focus and clear goals he obtained a PhD and describes the challenges he faced after the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) killed his father in 1989 during the Liberation War 1983-2005 and his mother died in 1992 due to the poor healthcare system.
However, underpinning her death was the SPLA's aborted capture of Juba on 7 July 1992 where civilians remained indoors and the sick could not access healthcare facilities. Though orphaned from childhood, Jangaling spends a portion of his book dealing with the denial of orphanhood that serves as a fundamental philosophy for success in the quest for education. Despite his challenges, he never abandoned his dreams nor shared his level of poverty that served as a deterrent to vulnerability and devised strategies for success. The second Sudanese Civil War has been recorded as devastating for its civilian displacement and refugees sent scurrying across its borders.
He considers how he had to choose between two devils; the one who killed his beloved parents and the one who oppressed a nation-the African people from the Southern Sudan and opted to voluntarily to the former. This interesting book considers various ironies in life. It describes how Jangaling voluntarily joined the SPLA as a child soldier and, from the front line, had an opportunity to reach Uganda and realise his educational dreams. Why have you chosen to be illiterate when education is for the poor? is an eye-opener and an inspiration to any poor or orphaned child struggling with education across the globe.
